It's been a commonly ask question among my readers who are not familiar with keto diet
Can you consume oat during keto? Why can't, I thought oats are good for our health?
I believe most of you have heard of the healthy benefits of oat. However it is not suitable for keto diet because it is a high starch or high carbohydrate food.
So, in the end, yes, oats can spike your blood sugar, putting you on a “sugar-high” your body doesn't necessarily agree with.
Another cons to eating oatmeal includes phytic acid, which has been studied to strip your body from absorbing the vitamins and minerals in the oats.
Of course you can consume oat as one of the staple food if you are not on keto diet, but do take note to choose the right type. While steel-cut oats and rolled oats are generally viewed as some of the most nutritious oats, instant oatmeal is more divisive. On the other hand, less processed oats such as steel-cut oats and oat groats pack more flavor and texture, but they take much longer to cook.
Steel cut oats (or Irish oatmeal) are oat groats right off the stalk that have been chopped into small pieces with a steel blade. Steel cut oats are heartier, chewier, and nuttier than other types of oatmeal, which makes them ideal as a healthy breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack.
💬How much steel cut oatmeal should you eat a day?
Here’s a simple, single-serving recipe you can make any time to help you eat the right amount of steel cut oatmeal:
In a pan, mix ¾ cup of hot water, milk, or broth with ¼ cup of dry steel cut oats
1. Bring liquid to a boil
2. Reduce heat
3. Simmer for 20 minutes or until oats reach desired texture
4. Remove from heat and enjoy!
If you’re short on time in the morning, mix up a batch of steel cut oats the night before so you can grab a healthy breakfast before starting your busy day.
